Mosquito Spraying In Chester County Designed To Control Threat Of West Nile Virus

NORRISTOWN: Environmental Protection Southeast Regional Director Joseph A. Feola today announced that spraying to control adult mosquito populations will be conducted July 20 in the Lionville area of Uwchlan Township, Chester County, where sampling has shown increased levels of mosquito production.
“DEP and its county partners have been working hard on an aggressive mosquito surveillance and control program to help us contain the virus in Pennsylvania,” Feola said. “The

department has learned a great deal from its five years of running the West Nile Virus Control Program, making us one of the national leaders in efforts to wage a successful war against virus-carrying mosquitoes. These years of experience are helping us target resources more efficiently and ensure an even greater effectiveness of our field programs.”

Weather conditions permitting, spraying will be conducted during the early evening on Thursday, July 20, in Uwchlan Township in the Lionville Area (Spring Run, Shamona, and Charles Martin Park areas). Truck-mounted spraying equipment will be used. Vector Disease Control Inc. of Greenville, Miss., will do the work. They will use Pyrocide 7396 applied at a rate of 0.66 ounces per acre. This will be the second spraying event this year in this area.

Certain species of mosquitoes carry West Nile virus, which, when transmitted to people, can cause West Nile encephalitis, an infection that can result in an inflammation of the brain. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, all residents of areas where virus activity has been identified are at risk of getting West Nile encephalitis; people over 50 have the highest risk of severe disease.
